Minutes of the 2005 California Teachers' Conference

Convened March 4, 2005 at Reformation Lutheran Church, San Diego

We opened our conference at 9:20 AM. Pastor Lowell Smith led us in worship with readings from Deuteronomy,     1 John, and John. Pastor Joel Otto, using the text of 1 John 4:7-21, spoke about God’s love in our ministry. Proclaiming God’s Love and Living God’s Love. The Reformation Singers, under the direction of Mr. Steven Rhode, beautified our worship service through song.

Andrew Midlebrandt, chairman, opened the meeting.

Dr. Gene Pfeiffer, Martin Luther College, gave a presentation entitled “Designing Instruction Using Authentic Assessment.”   He explained authentic instruction and gave us examples of this type of teaching.   In the afternoon he allowed us to prepare questions that could be used in an authentic lesson.

The volunteers served a delightful meal of a chicken potpie entree with cheesecake for dessert. This meal was served in the gym.

Chairman Mildebrandt led us in an afternoon devotion.

ELECTIONS

Elections were held for Program Committee member.

Nominated:            Peter Buege             Abigail Flister

Elections were held for Vice-Chairman.

Nominated:            Dave Peter              Jon Romsdahl

Those in bold print were elected.

Minutes were approved. Treasurer’s report was read.

Chairman Mildebrandt gave an overview of President Janke’s report.

Our offering of $242 has been designated to the Anna Plocher Benevolent Fund.

Peter Buege gave a report on the Spelling Bee. He noted that due to an increase in spectators, it would be beneficial to have one grade per classroom.  If enough volunteers are found, there will be one grade per classroom for this spelling bee.

Kristi Bredendick gave a report on the Art Fair. 12 schools participated. She asked that we encourage home school families in our congregation to participate. The new scoring system was well received. They will continue with this new format again next year. More judges are needed. Each school should supply a judge. Next year the CLHS Art Club will be asked to assist in the judging, and grand champion ribbons will be awarded to Kindergarten.

Jon Romsdahl reported on the track meet. The track meet will be Saturday, May 14, in Garden Grove.

Larry Zarnstorff reported on the Fine Arts Fair. Judges are needed. Submit student participation forms to Larry Zarnstorff by March 25.

Al Mindock encouraged schools to try the Science Team Challenge.

Pastor Bork gave a brief report on CLHS. All is going well there. St. Stephen and CLHS are sharing a called worker.

The principals will discuss a central location for the spring conference so that schools will not face driving challenges to the outlying schools.

Chairman Mildebrandt brought discussion to the floor to amend our constitution in regard to term limits for all officers. This motion was passed.

Be it resolved: That the phrase “an officer cannot succeed himself” be removed from the constitution for the Southern California Teachers’ Conference.

Andy Plocher motioned that we amend our conference membership to include staff ministers. This motion was passed.

Dave Schroeder gave a closing devotion on Philippians 2:5-12. He spoke of Christ’s love for us shown by his humbleness. We sang hymn 344:1,5, & 6.

Next year’s spring conference will be at Beautiful Savior, Carlsbad.

Respectfully submitted,

Kris Buege, secretary
