The California Pastoral Conference includes all active and retired pastors who are members of the Northern and Southern California Conferences in the district. This conference meets annually in the month of January.

Monday, January 29, 2007
10:00 The California Pastoral Conference at Our Shepherd. Lutheran Church, Lancaster, CA, opened with a Communion Service conducted by Pastor Dave Warskow, liturgist and Pastor Brian Peckman, who preached on I Corinthians 1:21-25. 11:15 The conference was called to order by Conference Chairman Bill Tackmier, roll call was taken by Pastor Matthew Vogt (56 pastors, retired pastors, vicars, staff ministers, and guests were present; 5 were excused; 12 were absent without excuse) and the agenda was adopted. (One more pastor and one more guest arrived the second day of conference.) Pastor David Salinas conducted the election for Chairman and Treasurer of the conference. Incumbents Rev. Bill Tackmier (for chairman) and Rev. John Moll (for treasurer) won re-election. Following a number of announcements and joint prayer, recessed for lunch. 12:30 Conference was called to order after lunch for the afternoon session. The conference’s exegesis paper entitled, “I am sending you . . .” (based on John 20:21-23; Luke 24:45-48; Matthew 28:18-20; Mark 16:15-16 and Acts 1:8) was delivered by Pastor Michael Carr. Following discussion of the paper, it was moved, seconded and passed to thank essayist. 1:45 Break 2:00 Paper entitled, “Adiaphora: Make Sure Matters that Don’t Matter Don’t, So What Does Will” was delivered by Pastor Donald Pieper. Following discussion of the paper, it was moved, seconded and passed to thank essayist. 3:15 Break 3:30 Paper entitled, “Walking the Narrow Lutheran Middle Road” was delivered by Pastor Chris Schroeder. Following discussion of the paper, it was moved, seconded and passed to thank essayist. 4:00 District Mission Board Chairman, Pastor Dan Wagenknecht delivered the District Mission Board report and District President, Rev. Paul Janke, delivered his District President’s Report. He answered questions and led discussion of items in his report. 4:45 Pastor Roger Carter conducted the evening devotion. The conference was adjourned for the day.
Tuesday, January 30 9:00 The second day of conference began with Pastor Dan Wagenknecht leading the Opening Devotion. 9:15 Call to order by Chairman Bill Tackmier. It was moved, seconded and passed to dispense with the reading of Monday’s minutes. It was decided that the minutes would be approved by the officers. 9:20 Treasurer’s report was presented with a balance of $956.59. It was moved, seconded and passed to not collect conference dues this year. Pastor Lyle Sonntag gave a brief update report on Pastor Lor’s health situation. Pastor Ricky Himm gave a Special Ministries report. 9:30 President Karl Gurgel gave his “State of the Synod Report” presentation. Following considerable discussion, fielding many questions and providing answers, President Gurgel was heartily thanked for his report. 10:30 Mr. Jim Hahn gave a thorough report on Martin Luther College and fielded questions. 10:55 Break 11:10 A panel discussion of Pastor Silas Krueger’s paper entitled, “Preaching in an Oral Age: Preaching Styles that ‘Speak’ to a Post-Literate Generation,” was conducted by Pastors David Salinas, Steven Degner, and Hans Caauwe. 12:15 Lunch break was taken following prayer by Pastor Dan Wagenknecht. 1:15 Reports Pastors Allen Schroeder and Lowell Smith reported on California Lutheran High School. Pastor Matthew Vogt made a Youth Discipleship Committee report Pastor Johnold Strey made a Worship Committee report Pastor Thomas Schulz made a Ministry of Christian Giving report Pastor Jim Proeber made an Evangelism Committee report Pastor John Moll made a Good Shepherd Bible Camp report Pastor Will Kant made a report on Alameda Pregnancy and Life Resource Center 2:20 Final Business Conference offering – a $356.00 dollar offering was gathered at our opening worship. It was motioned and seconded to send the offering to support Pan de Vida Hispanic Outreach in Santa Ana, CA. Site for the 2008 California Pastoral Conference – It was moved and supported to have Good Shepherd Lutheran, in Vallejo, CA host the 2008 conference. The conference God-willing will be held on Monday, January 28 and Tuesday, January 29, 2008. It was moved, seconded and adopted to dispense with the reading of the minutes, having the conference officers review and distribute them. The following resolution was moved, seconded and adopted: “The California Pastoral Conference thanks Our Shepherd Lutheran Church for providing the facilities for our 2007 study conference. The conference especially thanks Pastor Dave Warskow for making arrangements; the women of the congregation for providing breakfasts, lunches, snacks and drinks; those who served as ushers in our opening worship; and the musicians throughout the conference.” It was moved, supported and adopted to thank the Lord for the many years of faithful service of Pastors Dan Hennig, Don Seifert and Lowell Smith. 2:30 Adjournment - Conference Chairman Tackmier declared the conference adjourned. Pastor Ricky Himm closed the conference with a devotion and brief traveler’s liturgy.
