The Black Canyon Delegate Conference includes all congregations belonging to the Grand Canyon, Metro East, Metro West, and Superstition Mountains Circuits.  

This conference meets annually in February.

2007 Conference Minutes

 

Minutes - February 1-2, 2007

THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 1, 2007

10:00 AM The Black Canyon Conference opened with a devotion by Pastor Tim Otto of St. Thomas-Phoenix. His devotion was based on Lamentations 3:27 & Romans 8:1 under the theme We Are Not Consumed (encouraging zeal in Gospel outreach).

The Conference was called to order by Chairman William Herrmann. Conference attendees were welcomed. The secretary called the roll. It was RESOLVED to adopt the agenda. An announcement was made that the Arizona Lutheran Academy Thrift Store is just down the road and if the time is available, stop by. It has been a tremendous blessing to Arizona Lutheran Academy. Chairman William Herrmann asked that reporters announce to the front table so they can be worked into the agenda. He also asked conference attendees to start thinking about a congregation to host the 2008 conference. He also announced that 2006 conference minutes were available from the front table and that a sheet soliciting upcoming conference papers/presenters has been distributed and is to be returned to the front table before leaving on Friday.

10:30AM  Paper

Pastor Clayton Welch presented his paper entitled A Look At Church Growth. Following discussion, it was RESOLVED to thank the essayist.

Reports

Pastor David Clark reported on Adult Discipleship.

Staff Minister David Lieder reported on CCFS.

Announcements

Pastor William Meyer and Pastor Tim Otto presented a number of options for lunch. Pastor William Meyer offered the mealtime prayer.

11:25AM  The conference was recessed for lunch.

12:45PM  Paper

Pastor Paul Rutschow presented his paper entitled Archeology And The Bible. Following discussion, it was RESOLVED to thank the essayist.

Reports

Staff Minister Mike Mundstock reported on Youth Discipleship and on the White Mountain Christian Camp dates for this summer (June 10-22).

Announcements

Conference Secretary Thomas Rothe announced that congregations would be given the opportunity to have a door offering for the Spevacek family to help defray medical expenses. The offering can be sent to Josh Kozinski, PO Box 1921, Waukesha, WI, 53188. Pastor Dave Clark announced that on February 12th, at 2:00PM, a Service of Victory will be held for Audrey Spevacek. He also updated the progress of both Pastor Kirby Spevacek and his daughter Roxanne.

Pastor Dave Clark addressed the issue of the 2008 conference scheduled to fall on the Thursday & Friday after Ash Wednesday (which also happens to be Super Bowl Week in Glendale). He suggested the conference consider moving the conference dates to

January 24-25.

2:05PM  Paper

Staff Minister Dave Lieder presented his paper entitled Effective Church Councils: Key Ingredients In The Process Of Understanding, Planning, and Implementing The Work Of The Local Congregation. Following discussion, it was RESOLVED to thank the essayist.

Announcements

Pastor Paul Siegler announced that he is still assisting the Hosanna (Faith Comes By Hearing) taped ministry program. Any questions, contact him.

Chairman William Herrmann asked that the suggested paper/presenter sheet for up-coming conferences be returned to the front table before leaving Friday. He also announced that we have received (to date) 3 invites to host the 2008 conference. He asked the conference attendees to consider Pastor Dave Clark’s suggested dates of January 24-25.

Pastor William Meier announced that conference attendees could leave their materials in the Church overnight.

Closing Prayer

Chairman William Herrmann closed the first day of conference with prayer.

3:00PM The conference was recessed.

 

FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 2, 2007

9:30AM Day two of the Black Canyon Conference opened with a communion service. Pastor William Meier preached on Isaiah 61:10a on the theme “We Are Dressed By God”. The conference was called to order by Chairman William Herrmann.

10:20AM  Report

AZ/CA District President Pastor Paul Janke presented the District President’s Report. Chaiman William Herrmann asked that time be extended for questions. It was RESOLVED to extend questions by 10 minutes. Chairman William Herrmann asked that time be extended to again. It was RESOLVED to extend the time for questions to one more question. Following discussion, it was RESOLVED to thank Pastor Paul Jane for his report.

The Conference Secretary acknowledged teachers and guests in attendance.

Announcements

Chairman William Herrmann explained the reason for the revised conference agenda. Because of time constraints today, he asked for another agenda change. It was RESOLVED to change the agenda and have the presentation on Jonah before lunch and the presentation on Small Groups As An Effective Tool For Growing A Congregation And Assimilating New Members after lunch.

11:10AM  Paper

Chairman William Herrmann presented the paper An Isogogical Treatment Of The Book Of Jonah. This paper was first presented to the Metro North Pastoral Conference in 1984 by Pastor Gehardt Lambrecht. Chairman William Herrmann’s presentation included a short, personal, oral summarization and a written summarization that could be picked up from the front table. Following discussion, it was RESOLVED to thank the presenter.

Announcement

Chairman William Herrmann announced that the afternoon session would begin at 1:00PM.

11:50AM  The conference was recessed for lunch.

1:00PM  Paper

Pastor Jeff Gunn gave his presentation entitled Small Groups As An Effective Tool For Growing A Congregation And Assimilating New Members. Following discussion, it was RESOLVED to thank the presenter.

Reports

Pastor Thomas Schulz reported on Martin Luther College.

Pastor Jon Stern reported on the work of the District Worship Committee, WELS Schools, and Special Ministries. He also highlighted the Commission on Evangelism’s Seminar scheduled for February 17 at Arizona Lutheran Academy.

Pastor Dan Wagenknecht reported on the work of the AZ/CA District Mission Board.

Announcements

Pastor Paul Siegler announced that he had copies of the New Testament and Kid’s Bible (on CD/MP3 format). If anyone wanted one (or both), see him. Pastor William Meier announced that the Assisted Living Center on the Goodyear Campus had openings. Chairman William Herrmann announced invitations to host the 2008 conference. It was RESOLVED to accept the invitation from Peace-Cottonwood, AZ. It was further RESOLVED to hold the 2008 conference on January 24-25. It was further RESOLVED to designate the communion service offering of $461 to the Spevacek Assistance Fund. Pastor Richard Kugler offered his assistance to study the possibility of making the conference a one-day conference instead of a two-day conference. A report will be given at the 2008 conference.

Thank You’s

It was RESOLVED to thank the host pastors who doubled as communion service preacher, liturgist and Thursday devotion leader, and instrumentalist; Pastors William Meier, Tim Otto, and Clayton Welch, as well as the communion service organist & school children who beautified the service with music.

A ‘Thank You’ also goes out to the members of St. Thomas/Santo Tomas-Phoenix for being gracious hosts.

Closing Prayer

Pastor Clayton Welch closed the conference with prayer.
