Ideas for Maundy Thursday

Christian Worship: Occasional Services offers a complete Maundy Thursday service, including the Stripping of the Altar.  This service is unique in that the sermon is placed at the beginning of the service.  It also makes use of the Great Litany (also found in Christian Worship: Altar Book).  You could place the sermon in the usual place after the Hymn of the Day.  A responsive prayer for Maundy Thursday is also available in Christian Worship: Altar Book.

Another option for Maundy Thursday is to take a catechetical approach in teaching the doctrine of the Lord’s Supper.  Both Luther’s Small Catechism sections on Lord’s Supper and his Christian Questions could find prominent places in the service.  The Christian Questions have a confession/absolution flavor, as well as serving to prepare communicants for the sacrament..

Another way to include variety is the distribution hymn.  Following is a short list of distribution hymns/songs.  They have a more contemporary feel to them.  Most require choral involvement.  They reflect the biblical teaching on the Lord’s Supper.
